Solid Wood and Real Wood Engineered Care And Maintenance There are two main finishing methods for solid wood floors; Lacquered and Oiled.
Lacquered floors have a surface layer protecting the wood from damage which is durable and easily maintained. Cleaning is done with a dry or damp mop or vacuum. Once the lacquer has been damaged it is advisable to sand and re lacquer the entire floor to maintain an even finish rather than spot lacquering. This is a procedure which is best carried out by a professional.
Oiled floors are floors where the protection comes from the oil which is impregnated into the surface of the solid wood. This other gives a very different feel and texture to the floors, a more natural finish.
An oiled floor requires more care and maintenance than a lacquered floor however there is seldom a requirement for a professional to carry out this procedure. Regular maintenance can be done by the consumer.
The recommended cleaning methods for oiled floors are :
Vacuum cleaning / Dry mop Damp mop. Finish off with by buffing the surface
The cleaning should be carried out using as little moisture as possible avoiding unnecessary removal of the oil from the wood surface.
Every 2-3 years (when necessary) periodic maintenance to the oiled surface is required.
After cleaning the floor and allowing it to dry, apply a recommended oil (Kahrs refresher oil) using a cotton cloth. Allow to dry for at least one hour. Buff with a clean cotton cloth and leave the floor for 12 hours without traffic.
